It seems like every month for a while now we’ve included a different one of these De Molen Special Series one-off beers, so why break the habit now.
This beer was probably my favourite new De Molen from our last shipment, and more than a few have made their way into (and out of) my home beer fridge.
Here we have a delicious smoked rye IPA, no real surprises given the name literally translates as ‘Smoke and Rye’.
It pours a very dark blond, or probably more a light amber colour with a nice foamy head. The aroma is firstly of caramel malt with some tropical fruit notes from the Cascade and Simcoe hops. I don’t get any smoke in the nose, even though I know to look for it.
The flavour is a nice balance of sweet caramel malt and citrus and light stone fruit, with a firm bitterness kicking in about halfway through. This earthy, spicy bitterness stays right to the end, finishing dry with a little spicy rye prickle. I still don’t really get any smoke, more an earthiness but if you try hard you might.
A very nice beer that is more like an English IPA than a US-styled IPA, despite the use of the US hops. The ABV adds a little warmth to the lingering aftertaste.
