These ‘Special Series’ beers from De Molen are usually interesting beers to try, but this particular offering tweaked my interest as I had to idea what Phantasm Powder was, or how it was supposed to affect the flavour.
A google search shows that it is made from Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc grapes, and when added to the fermenter can unlock tropical fruit aromas.
In addition, this NEIPA has mango, Eldorado, Mosaic & Sabro hops added. So let’s see how this all mixes together in the beer.
My first observation is how thick and rich the body is, it looks like mango nectar coming out of the bottle. There is indeed a strong tropical fruit aroma with lots of mango, pineapple and then some coconut from the Sabro hops.
The flavour is again full of the same tropical fruits notes, mango as you’d expect along with pineapple and apricot. As it always does, the Sabro hops add a layer of coconut to proceedings. The body isn’t as smooth or thick in mouthfeel as I was expecting from the appearance.
There is still a rich flavour on offer that is joined by a definite bitterness on the finish. More than you’d expect in a NEIPA, but I think it makes this beer more drinkable than if it wasn’t there. A good offering by De Molen.
