Here we have another beer from Dutch-cum-Belgian brewery Schelde, this time it is their Belgian Tripel Zee Zuiper. And this beer is the workhorse of the brewery, being their most popular beer sold.
Google suggests the name means ‘Swamp Drunk’, when in fact the beer takes its name from a wetlands area nearby. But Google’s option makes for a better story for sure, and who wouldn’t be encouraged by the label declaring the beer to be ‘strong, fresh and determined’!
It pours the traditionally dark golden colour, with a beading white foam. Malty and fruity are the two obvious descriptors for the aroma, with everything having that classic Belgian yeast about it.
And those aromas pretty come through true in the flavour. A solid malty backbone supports some fruitiness in the form of peach, banana and a little citrus. As you want from a tripel, the hops provide a spicy touch to the back end of the beer.
You can see why this beer is popular for the brewery, especially as you know how common tripels are for all Belgian breweries.
