Ahh, a good old black IPA! Back in the early 2010’s this was a style that was hugely popular, with a whole host of breweries serving up their interpretation on a style whose name is even a complete paradox.
It was a relatively short-lived hey-day, the NEIPA craze has endured much more strongly, so it’s a nice surprise now to see a black IPA from one of our breweries. And I’ll pretty much always bite when offered.
So we find ourselves with this imperial Black IPA from Uiltje. Hop masters of The Netherlands, I expected this to be a decent drop. And I don’t think any of us will be disappointed by what’s about to be in your glass.
Pouring a very dark brown, just short of black, body with that nice coffee-coloured foam that I always think hints that dark beers are going to be good.
Roasted malt, tropical and citrus fruits and a hint of coffee are on offer in both aroma and taste. Some black IPA’s are malt-dominant, which makes them more like hoppy porters. But this beer is an IPA with the hops very forward. Not as much tropical citrus in the flavour as the nose suggested but more an earthiness that compliments the rich roasted malt body well.
