Uiltje turn their hand to brewing something very different for them with this beer. And before you can fully appreciate it, there probably needs to be a little knowledge first.
Sahti is type of farmhouse ale from Finland, though it is common enough to be placed as being from any of the top part of the countries of northern Europe. The beer is made from malted and unmalted grains, most commonly barley and rye. Juniper is often used either as well as or instead of hops, and the mash is filtered through juniper twigs and then fermented with a top fermenting ale yeast.
So now you know what you’re drinking, is it any good?
It pours a heavy looking orange colour and while the aroma isn’t exactly strong, sticking your nose in the glass does present an intriguing scent that is a little fruity, a little earthy and a little funky.
To taste, my first impression was sweetness from the malt, and confirming that heavy body. As the beer progresses, the farmhouse funk does become more apparent and there is a little hop bitterness at the end. But it is that sweetness that lasts right the way through, just about balanced out with hop and funk.
I don’t think I’ve tasted too many sahit’s to have any great reference point for the style, but I finished this beer and did enjoy the ride.
