The ‘Postel’ label beers are pretty easy to find around Belgium, and for good reason. They are brewed by the Alken Maes Brewery, which is a very big operation in Belgium.
Commencing in 1988 after the merget of two smaller breweries (Maes and Alken), it was purchased by Scottish & Newcastle, who were in turn bought out by Heineken back in 2007, utilising the logistical and production advantages that ownership brings.
So easy to find beers, but are they any good?
It pours a clear golden colour, with a foaming white head. There is a fruity aroma, with a hint of spice in the background.
To taste the beer is at first sweet with both fruit and grainy malt, with banana and pear being the most obvious. As the beer progresses the hop bitterness balances things out, and it gets drier toward the finish with a lingering spicy bitterness.
It is pretty much your stock standard Belgian Blond beer, easy to drink, doesn’t really upset anyone and is readily available in your local supermarket (if you are Belgian I mean!). What’s not to like?
