For a brewery as old as Brouwerij Dr Ryck, it flies under the radar somewhat. Established way back in 1886 in the East Flanders town of Herzele, their beers are really only seen in bars within a fairly confined radius of the brewery.
De Ryck was originally called ‘De Gouden Arend’ which translates as The Golden Eagle, as seen in the brewery coat of arms to this day. The brewery is run by fourth generation of the family, Anne De Ryck is considered the first female brewing engineer of Belgium!
Our beer is a typical Belgian blond, which from the aroma is a very yeast driven beer. You don’t have to try too hard to smell the banana in the yeast, it dominates everything else.
To taste, the beer is pretty typical with a pale malt body, and a fair bit of fruity sweetness for a Belgian blond. The mouthfeel is reasonably soft, and the beer doesn’t really dry out. All the while that banana still dominates the aroma. From the middle to the finish there is some hop bitterness that sharpens things up a little.
It is quite an easy drinking beer, I’d like it to be a little less fruity and a little drier on the finish, but that’s just a personal preference.
