Pannepot is dark brown, almost black, with a tan head which collapses leaving rings of lacing on the glass. The nose is really complex – several sniffs will reveal different and new aromas.
Most obvious are the dark, over-ripe fruits of plums, raisins and cherries. Sweetness also comes from thechocolate malts, and bready yeast.
If the smell was interesting, the bold taste is truly amazing. A rich sweetness from the over-ripe dark stone fruits, caramel malts and almost a molasses thickness. The spices do their job, cutting through the sweetness to deliver some prickly tingles and tartness. The combination is as unique as it is outstanding.
And don't dare try this beer straight from the fridge - you'll be doing a great injustice to one of the best dark beers you can get.
The beer gets its name from the fishing village of De Panne, close to the French border. It was famous for two things – the fishing boats called ‘Pannepots’ and the intriguing dark ale enjoyed by the fisherman. This beer is a tribute to the fisherman, and their rich flavourful brew.
