Boon is known for making some of the best Lambic beers you can get. But lambics are years in the making, so the geuzeries tend to make a few ‘normal’ beers so they have something to sell all the time. And while such beers aren’t that well known It comes as no surprise that many of them are really good beers.
This Boon beer is a traditional Belgian strong dark ale, the style being somewhat of a catch-all for Belgian dark beers that don’t fit into any other distinct dark beer style.
It has been made since 1883, with the name coming from the comments of a traveller who tasted the beer and declared ‘this beer has sprung from the clutches of the devil himself!’ I think that meant he liked it!
Pouring a dark brown colour and giving of the expected dried dark fruits aroma, with a healthy dose of Belgian yeast. The first thing I noticed on tasting was the high carbonation with the flavour dancing across your tongue. Sweet caramel malt and those dark stone fruits like raisins and prunes, brown sugar and even brown bread. This beer is way too easy to drink for the 8% ABV, so beware.
