While the success of Brasserie Dupont has been largely on the back of the renowned Saison Dupont, they do have a bunch of other beers in their portfolio.
One such label is ‘Moinette’, and we featured the Moinette Blond in our October 2024 packs. Now it is time to show you the Moinette Brune. And while the Blond was released in 1955 it took another 31 years for this dark version to be introduced.
Made from five specialty malts, brewed in the traditional copper kettles that have been in service since 1920 and fermented with Dupont’s characterful yeast, this beer is a treat for your tastebuds.
The body is a real dark hazelnut brown colour and while the aroma isn’t strong (especially while the beer is cold), if you stick your nose into the glass you will get the chocolate and cocoa malts along with the spicy hops.
To taste it is initially sweet, a fruity malt sweetness that suggests chocolate and caramel as well as a fruity aspect with the taste of raisins, plums and cherry. As the beer progresses the yeast characters kick in with some herbal spiciness in the shape of clove, coriander and even maybe licorice.
The mouthfeel is full and balanced, drying out towards a finish that is long and satisfying, doing little to betray the big ABV of this beer.
