La Trappe are the beers of the De Koeningshoeven Monasty in The Netherlands, one of only nine Authentic Trappist Product monastery breweries that remain.
People generally associate the ‘quadrupel’ beer style with Belgian beers, but La Trappe is credited with being the first beer to use that term.
This beer was originally brewed in 1991 as a winter seasonal, like many of the Belgian Christmas beers we’ve become used to. However, its popularity led the brewery to include the beer in its permanent range.
It pours kind of a reddish-brown colour, much lighter than most of the Belgian quads. I find it has quite a perfumed aroma, with hints of banana, raisins, vanilla and clove.
The first sip is quite sweet, full of rich caramel malt and dried, candied fruit like figs and plums. As the beer progresses the sweetness thins out as more spicy bitterness joins in. There is also a warmth from the alcohol that helps with the pleasantly full lingering aftertaste.
Along with Chimay, this is probably the most easily-found of all the Trappist brands, both overseas and in Australia. But that’s a good thing if it helps people get into these styles of beers that are still very much niche in our market.
