This is the beer from Brasserie Achouffe that was formerly known as Chouffe Houblon. Under its former guise I always considered this the best of all the Belgian IPA’s, so let’s see how it stands after so many years.
Our beer pours a slightly hazy pale gold with a big, frothy white foam. The aroma is an intriguing mix of citrus, pine and tropical fruit, largely thanks to the dry-hopping with Saaz, Tomahawk and Amarillo hops.
The flavour is equally as beguiling. It starts with a little fruity sweetness laid over a full malt body. The pine or green hop character quickly takes centre stage while the beer really dries out. There is some bitterness on the finish, combined with a little spicy prickly from the yeast. But still it is that green hop character that lasts longest.
It remains my favourite Belgian IPA. I think the real difference is that this is a proper Belgian beer first and foremost. Take away all the hops and you’d still have a delicious Belgian Strong Golden Ale or Tripel. Then the hops are added – a mix of old and new with Saaz offering an earthiness paired with one of the classic US IPA hops in Amarillo that gives the tropical fruits and citrus character. Truly well done!
