For those that can’t (or haven’t) called in to the beer shed since we’ve had these Beer Underground beers, I can tell you that the can designs are really good. They definitely grab your attention, and then get you thinking about what is going on in the designs. Just as this one does. And the beer isn't bad either.
Our beer is a NEIPA. As I’ve been asked a few times lately, this acronym stands for New England India Pale Ale. This is because the first beer in this style was Heady Topper from The Alchemist brewery, which is located in Vermont in the New England area in the north-east of the United States. It was an unfiltered, unpasteurised beer with a focus on hop flavours and aromas, rather than the hop bitterness associated with west coast IPAs.
The can offers some detail on the hops used: in the whirlpool is El Dorado Incognito, Sabro Incognito and HBC 1019 (an experimental hop not yet named). For dry hopping they use 30% x HBC 1019, 30% x Sabro, 20% x El Dorado, 10% x Amora Preta (anew one to me) and 10% x Citra. Good old Citra!
A clean malt profile supports all the hops and lets them shine. The result is a smooth fruity taste with lots of orange and coconut, but also apricot, pineapple, grapefruit and even a hint of berry flavour. The mouthfeel is quite full with a noticeable lack of bitterness other than a zesty tingle in the aftertaste. An easy beer to drink, with enough interesting flavours to look out for along the way.
