Gruut Bruin is a dark brown beer with an orange tinge, and has a medium sized beige head which settles slowly. The sweet aroma is of caramel malts and dried fruits, with the undoubted spices coming through as well. The flavour is full and sweet, picking up on the malts and fruits while at the same time having a mild bitterness. This beer has a persistent aftertaste which is believed to come from a mixture of nuts used in the brewing process.Overall this is a very interesting take on the classic Belgian 'dubbel' style. Beer Fact: 'Gruit' style beers are made to a 1000-year old recipe, dating back to the time before hops were discovered.  The gruit was a mix of herbs, spices, plants and nuts which acted as both bittering agent and preservative (just as hops do now).  The characteristics of this beer would have varied from brewer to brewer, as the gruit mix was made up of ingredients local to each brewer.
