by Tre Caratteri

This is a beer I had on my travels and really enjoyed, so perfect to include in our beer club packs!

Tre Caratteri (Three Characters) is a small craft brewery in the Sicilian town of Catania on the island of Sicily.  Started by three friends in 2018, their aim is to ‘create beer for sportsmen (sic: and women!), rich in minerals and made of all those perfumes that only Sicily can boast.’

So it has to be almost like a health tonic, right?!!!

Even the name encloses a pun, with Distanza translating as ‘Distance’.

Our beer pours a dark brown colour, presenting really nicely in the glass.  It has a deep, complex aroma with lots of dried dark fruits and some spices.

The taste is immediately inviting with a lovely smooth, rich front palate that offers caramel malt, dried dark stone fruits like raisins and dates, and interesting dried orange citrus and in behind all that is a nuttiness from the Sicilian hazelnuts that are added to the ingredients list.

A full flavour lasts throughout the beer, with a satisfying lingering sweetness cut with just enough hop bitterness to balance it out.

It is a really good version of a Belgian dubbel, which the brewery has done a great job of making their own with the addition of a native ingredient.
