Schofferhofer is a very popular beer, both in Germany and more widely through Europe. It was originally founded in 1806, but has been sold a couple of times over the years so that it is currently owned by the Radeberger Group.
This company also owns other well known German beer labels such as DAB, Clausthaler, Berliner and of course Redeberger! It is interesting that this beer has gained such a market share despite only being introduced in 1978.
Our beer pours a cloudy straw colour with a thick white foam that settles quickly. As you pour the beer you get the aroma of bananas and clove, which is virtually mandatory for any German wheat beer.
The flavour is light and fresh, with a little fruity sweetness early on. This is joined by the clove spice and a little hop bitterness. The beer sits fairly lightly on the palate, though it doesn’t really dry out too much on the way. In the aftertaste the banana flavour comes through again with a little prickly finish.
Overall it is a very decent German hefe, and while this style of beer really isn’t my favourite at all, I can see why the Germans drink steins full of this.
