The family owned Kasteel (Castle) brewery has a history dating back to 1811, now with the seventh generation of the family running the show.
In 2023 they introduced this beer to their range, hoping to capitalise on the success of the Kasteel Rouge (cherry) beer that has become a favourite since it was released in 2007.
The base beer is a solid Belgian ale brewed with barley malt, wheat and Belgian candi sugar. Loads of fresh raspberries and raspberry juice are added to the beer after the first fermentation has finished. This is so that those delicious raspberry flavours aren’t lost during the primary fermentation.
The result is a great looking beer with a pinky-purple colour and a pinkish foam. The aroma and the taste is all about the raspberries, your senses are literally smacked with an intense raspberry assault.
The fruit offers a lovely balance of sweet and tart (not really sour), to that solid base Belgian ale. The use of real fruit ensures the fruit character doesn’t come across as artificial or sickly sweet.
The brewery suggests you serve this beer at 5 degrees, but as it warms you’ll notice the flavours soften as more of the malt joins the fruit dominance. A nice new beer from this established brewery.
