Well thanks guys - the first Belgian pack has sold out!
Here's a second instalment to sate your lust for Belgium's beery delights.
1. Atrium Clementine 5.3% (330ml) - a staple beer style in any Belgian bar is the Witbier - a beer made using at least 40% wheat malt, usually with the additions of coriander and orange peel, plus the Belgian witbier yeast that will give off that banana note. This one is even fanicer and uses the peel of fresh clementines
2. Saison d'Erpe-mere 6.9% (330ml) - This beer pours a straw yellow, and is working overtime producing a creamy white head which billows in the glass. The smell is all about the yeast – rich bold and intriguing. Zesty fruits and grassy blossoms do their best to compete with the musty ‘horse blanket’
3. Pauwel Kwak 8.4% (330ml) - probably more well-known for the beers iconic 'coachman's glass', this is a very good beer without the theatre. Amber in colour, fruity and malty, look for the flavour of toffee, caramel, raisins, plums, honey and clove
4. Bersalis Tripel 9.5% (330ml) - tripels are the Aussie pale ales of the Belgian brewing scene - pretty much every new brewery will make one, the quality of which a new brewery will immediately be judged by. And there's a reason there are so many tripels; they are delicious! This ones on the bigger side for ABV, with a slightly sweet malt body, summer stone fruit flavours with cloves and a little spicy yeast finish
5. Delirium Nocturnum 8.5% (330ml) - the lesser-known of the Delirium beers, this is a strong dark ale. A rich dark-amber malt body carries flavours of caramel, dried dark stone fruits - think raisins, plums, dark grape skins - chocolate, licorice and a little spiciness in the finish
6. Sans Pardon 11.0 (330ml) - from one of my favourite Belgian breweries, and defnitely one of the most under-rated, everything that comes out of De Dochter Van De Korenaar is superb. This Russian Imperial Stout is no exception, so rich and smooth, loads of dark chocolate, hints of coffee, dried dark stone fruits without every getting cloyingly sweet, it finishes reasonable dry with a lingering spice and warmth from the big ABV. It's even got Rooibos in it so it must be good for you, right?!!
