I’m a big fan of the Weltenburger Monastery.  Sitting on the bank of the Danube in the Bavarian region of Germany, this place is a definite visit on my next trip to Europe.  I’ve loved every beer that we’ve featured from them, and this lager is not about to change that.

I mean, what can go wrong with a German Helles Lager brewed by the oldest monastery brewery in the world?

You’ll fill your glass with a beautifully bright, golden liquid offering a biscuity malt aroma with some grassy, herbal accents from those traditional Noble Bavarian hops Hercules, Perle and Tradition.  A simple aroma but one which invites you in from the start.

The flavour is uncomplicated, but just as alluring.  A fairly crisp grainy malt backbone with just enough sweetness that balances so well with the bitterness that grows from start to finish.  There is a beautiful lingering aftertaste with that sharp little spicy tingle that just begs another sip.  And another, and another.

If you are really enjoying this beer, then so you should.  At the World Beer Awards last year this beer was voted German’y best Helles/Munchner-style lager.  High praise indeed for a country that is so full of wonderful lagers.
