THe Maisel’s brewery was started in 1887 by two brothers, and four generations later is still owned and run by the same family. It is based in the town of Bayreuth in northern Bavaria.
Bavaria is considered the birthplace of weissebier, dating back as far as the 16th-Century, and it is the classic German wheat beer that is the staple of Maisel’s.
Yet it was only in 1995 that Maisel’s introduced the Dunkel Weisse to their range to become the fourth type of weisse beer they offer. So given the history of the brewery, it really was only recently adopted. Even the alcohol-free weissebier was added before the Dunkel!
So what is our beer like then?
It pours with a brown body with a nice fruity (banana) and spicy (clove) aroma. And of course these characteristics follow through in the flavour. There is a lovely malty flavour – toffee, nuts and a little roasty malt, along with the fruit sweetness, but the beer is balanced so well that it remains light and spicy with just a moderate hop bitterness.
Like a lot of the German beers, this beer is made for easy drinking but with heaps of flavour. There is a reason why the German beers come in 500ml bottles!
