The Czech Republic boasts the highest beer consumption per capita in the world. And with a brewing history dating back many centuries, it is no wonder that this little country produces some world class lagers.
I remember drinking this beer during our first trip to Prague in the early 2000’s. It was the first dark Czech beer I encountered, so it stuck in the memory. It was probably helped by the fact I thought it was a really good beer that cost about 40 cents per half litre at the time!
Prices have increased a lot over the years, but I’m very happy to see that the quality of this beer has remained.
I think it is really good brewing when you can balance a lot of flavour in a beer with a (relatively) low ABV. And that’s exactly what this beer does. Pouring an attractive dark brown colour and with a solid roasted malt aroma you expect this beer to be bigger than it actually is.
The taste is smooth and balanced, with a rich roasty malt flavour that offers dark chocolate, coffee, a little caramel sweetness mixed with a noticeable hop bitterness and a lingering woody note. Such a good beer that you’ll be glad comes in big cans.
